Biography
Willem Roelofs studeerde één jaar aan de Haagse Academie van Beeldende Kunst en ging daarna in de leer bij de Haagse landschapschilder H. van de Sande Bakhuyzen. Zijn stijl ontwikkelde zich van romantische landschapschilderkunst via het realisme naar het Haags impressionisme. Willem Roelofs was de belangrijkste voorloper van de Haagse School. Willem Roelofs gaf onder meer les aan P.J.C. Gabriël en A. van Everdingen. Hij gaf H.W. Mesdag af en toe raad. Het werk van Willem Roelofs is door veel musea in Nederland aangekocht.
